LED Backhaul Temporary setup with tripod

Last Update: Sep 15th, 2021

Introduction

The LED Backhaul has M5 and UNC1/4 female threaded holes on the bottom of the unit, allowing it to be mounted on a general purpose surveillance camera pedestal or digital camera tripod.
In the in-house experiment described in the 7th edition of the Engineering Blog, the camera was fixed to a metal rack using a general-purpose surveillance camera base. In this article, I will introduce the method of installation using a camera tripod suitable for temporary installation.

Equipment used for temporary tripod installation

・A tripod with a load capacity of 3kg or more.
The LED Backhaul weighs about 3kg, so please prepare a tripod with a load capacity of 3kg or more to prevent it from tipping over.
We use a tripod made by a major tripod manufacturer for general camera use. If you are using a tripod with a load capacity of 3kg or more, it is recommended to use a tripod with a load capacity of 3kg or more.

・Fine movement head for directional adjustment

The LED Backhaul is designed to be used with a tripod that is equipped with a free head or 3-way head. On the other hand, fine movement heads (especially those without a locking mechanism) are subject to slight movement of the directional adjustment screw over time or due to vibration, which can cause misorientation.

・Batteries capable of supplying AC100V
If a 100V AC commercial power supply cannot be secured at the temporary installation site, please prepare a battery that can supply 100V AC.
We use Anker Powerhouse. We use Anker Powerhouse to protect the buttons of the various power supply ports from being unintentionally pressed during transportation, which would consume the remaining battery power.

・PC or Android device for SNR verification
Use a PC or Android device with a dedicated app installed to check if the LED backhaul is facing the best direction with reference to signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and communication speed. By adjusting the scope mounted on the top of the LED Backhaul when adjusting the direction, it is possible to complete the direction adjustment without a terminal.

Installation of various equipment

The following is a view of the tripod being temporarily set up, combining the equipment mentioned earlier.

If you want to use it temporarily for an experiment or event, you can use a tripod and batteries to set up a wireless communication environment in a short time.
Although tripods can be installed quickly, they are not as stable as those fixed to racks or structures, so there is a risk of them falling over due to strong winds or contact. For applications where no one is around the equipment at all times, it may be necessary to set it up in an area with few people coming and going, use color cones to warn people, or add weights to the tripod to prevent it from falling over.
